Paradise Island Foods has taken a keen interest in becoming “Green” leader in the food
production and distribution industry.
Paradise Island Foods
takes pride in our ability to deliver efficient, dependable and
quality distribution service to our customers in a cost-effective
manner. Unfortunately
due to the escalating energy prices of fuel, the cost of business
is be pushed higher. Higher costs mean that our customers are then
forced to pass these costs onto all consumers who buy groceries
from their stores. This has a direct impact on all of our families.
Some folks may say that there is nothing they can do to control
their fuel costs – we say there is. Although we cannot directly impact
actual energy pricing, we think we can certainly do something to
reduce the amount of energy that we use, and ultimately reduce our
costs. Using less energy not only cuts the cost to the consumer,
but also results in less emissions into the environment as well.
This is both good for the environment and good for business!
We have undertaken a series of in depth energy audits on our facility
to understand exactly how much energy we use and how to creatively
reduce our overall consumption and become as carbon neutral as possible.
A few things that we have implemented or are in the process of installing:
- Achieved BC Organic certification in 2007
(environmentally friendly processes and chemicals)
- Turn down heater thermostats (reduce gas
consumption)
- Programmable thermostats (reduce gas consumption)
- Replace all lighting with new high efficiency
lighting (reduce electricity consumption)
- Lighting motion detector switches (reduce
electricity consumption)
- All electric forklift equipment (reduce
emissions)
- On demand hot water heaters (reduce energy
consumption)
- Hybrid reefer trailers (reduce overall noise
in the neighborhood = Happy neighbors)
- Hydraulic dock plate conversions (reduced
dock plate noise)
- Completed energy audits in 2009 with BC
Food Processor’s Association, BC Hydro and Shore Energy Systems.
